Chess Tournaments

A chess tournament is a great way to evaluate your child’s chess skills. Additionally, in a tournament setting, it energizes kids and stokes their interest in chess as well.

Unrated Sections:

Rookie – Grades K-1 (3 rounds, no clock)

Primary – Grades K-4 (3 rounds, no clock)

Rated Sections:

Elementary– K-6 U-600 (3 rounds, G/25 d5)

Reserve K-9 U-900 (3 rounds, G/25 d5)

Championship- K-12 U- 1200 (3 rounds, G/25 d5)

Open K-12 and adults accepted Over 1200 (3 rounds, G/25 d5)

Tie-breaks: Modified Median, Solkoff. If players tie with perfect scores in any section, a blitz playoff with color lots will decide the winner.

Time Control:

All sections will be G/30 or G/25; d5

The early bird price expires always 3 days prior to the monthly tournament. Every Wednesday at 6:30 pm.

If possible, please register in advance to avoid the $10 late fee.

Check-in by 11:45am (if already registered)

On-site registration is available from 11 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. $59.
The first round begins at 12:00pm. The following 2-3 rounds begin as soon as the last game of the section is completed.

3SS– All chess players will play three (3) rounds regardless of their results.

AWARDS:

Trophies to top 3 in all sections. The award ceremonies begin as soon as the section’s final round is completed.

Notes:
Chess sets, chessboards, and scoresheets will be provided by the tournament organizer.

Please bring a pencil to record your game and, if you have one, a chess clock.

Please keep in mind that photographs will be taken during the event.

The rules of this tournament are based on the handbook of the United States Chess Federation.

 

SECTION DESCRIPTION

This section applies if your player is in grades K–2. Additionally, this section was appropriate for tournament newcomers. This section is unrated. As a result, there is no need for a USCF membership. This section will begin at 12:00 p.m. and should end before or around 3:00 p.m.

This section applies if a chess player has no or little chess experience and is in grades K–6. This is not the section for chess players if they want to obtain a USCF chess rating.
This section is unrated. As a result, there is no need for a USCF membership.
This section will begin at 12:00 p.m. and should end before or around 2:45 p.m.

This section applies if your player is in grades K–8. Both newcomers and seasoned chess players can benefit from this section. This is the ideal tournament for chess players who want to obtain a US Chess chess rating. This section is rated. As a result, it is required to get a USCF membership. US Chess Membership is very inexpensive and costs $20.00 per year. Before the start of any rated tournament, chess players must have it; otherwise, entry will be denied.
This section will begin at 12:00 p.m. and should end before or around 3:00 p.m.

This section applies if your player is in grades K–9. This is ideal for seasoned chess players. This section is rated. As a result, it is required to get a US Chess membership. US Chess Membership is very inexpensive and costs $20.00 per year. Before the start of any rated tournament, chess players must have it; otherwise, entry will be denied.
This section will begin at 12:00 p.m. and should end before or around 3:00 p.m.

This section applies if your player is in grades K–12. This is ideal for seasoned chess players. This section is rated. As a result, it is required to get a US Chess membership. This section will begin at 12:00 p.m. and should end before or around 3:30 p.m.

This section applies if your player is in grades K–12 and adults. Some of the most talented young chess players in the area will be playing in the open section. 

To keep the level of competition high, we established the following rule: You cannot participate in this tournament if you have a rating of less than 1200 or none.  This section is rated. Before the start of this rated tournament, the tournament director will look up your current rating to see if it is above 1200; if it is not, entry will be denied. This section will begin at 12:00 p.m. and end before or around 3:00 p.m.

US Chess Membership:

  1. US Chess membership is not necessary if your player is participating in an unrated section.
  2. Your player must be a member of USCF to register for the rated section. $20.00 for the entire year.

Form for Individual Registration:

Before the monthly tournament, you must submit the registration form and payment by Wednesday at 6 p.m. (deadline). There will be a late fee for each entry if the form and fee are submitted after the cutoff date. When your payment is processed, you will receive a confirmation email at the end of each business day.
